Police in Phnom Penh are looking for a man suspected of duping a woman he met on Facebook and robbing her of her belongings including more than $3,000 in jewelry on Tuesday.

Captain Chan Seng, deputy chief of Ou’bekka’am commune, said Huon Sophea, a product vendor online, met the suspect known as “Tii Fee” in September on Facebook.

Cap Seng said the two had often chat with each other and would eventually form a relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend.

After months of chatting on Facebook, the suspect on Tuesday invited Ms Sophea to meet him at a guesthouse with a promise of $100 in exchange for sex.

She agreed and the suspect booked a room and waited for her to arrive.

When she entered the room, the suspect held her by the throat and pointed a vegetable knife at her and threatened to kill her, Cap Seng said.

He then snatched her bag, which contained $2,000 in cash, a phone, a gold necklace, gold rings and a gold bracelet, before fleeing the room. The jewelry combined are worth more than $1,000.

After the robbery, Ms Sophea then told the owner of the guesthouse to check their security cameras. However, the guesthouse did not utilise security cameras in its premises.

She later rode her motorbike to the Ou’bekka’am commune police office to file a complaint against the suspect. Colonel Hour Mengvang, chief of Sen Sok district police, yesterday said they do not yet have the identity of the suspect.

We have seen his photos, but we do not know his real name nor his identity, Col Meanvang said. We are now working on this case.
