An Algerian man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a bag with about Bt38,900 worth of cash and other valuables from a South Korean tourist in Pattaya.Pattaya police chief Pol Colonel Apichai Krobphet said Mouloud Sadat, 53, was arrested at 8.30pm at the front of Soi Na Klua 33 on Pattaya-Na Klua road on Friday.
His arrest came after Seung Chul Lee, 45, from South Korea, filed a complaint with the police station at 7.30pm on April 17 that his Prada bag was stolen while he was dining at a restaurant in front of Soi Na Klua 27.
Seung told police that his bag was worth Bt60,000 and it had a pair of eyeglasses worth Bt10,000 and a power bank worth Bt2,000, as well as Bt20,000 in cash and 650,000 Korean won, or about Bt18,900.
Police identified Sadat after viewing security-camera footage.
After Sadat was arrested, police found the bag, the glasses and power bank at his rented room, but the cash had been all spent.
Turkish Lady Tourist Robbed By Patong Motorcycle Taxi Driver
Police instigated a search for a motorcycle taxi driver after a complaint from a female Turkish tourist over sexual harassment and robbery.
The 26-year-old Turkish tourist was discovered by a police officer at Bangwad Dam on Monday while he was out jogging.
She was found sitting in the middle of the road.
The woman claimed that she had come from Soi Nanai in Patong at about 3am on a motorcycle taxi, expecting to be taken back to her hotel room in Patong, but the taxi driver instead brought her all the way over Patong Hill to the dam, tried to sexually assault her, and then robbed her.
She said that she had lost her bag with an iPhone 6s, Bt4,000 in cash and credit cards in the incident.
After checking the CCTV camera along the route from Patong to Kathu along with other evidence, police found that the motorcycle taxi man actually works at a hotel in Kathu and as a motorcycle taxi driver as a part-time job.
He was apprehended and taken to his room by police with a view to locating the stolen items, followed by the place where he had dumped her bag.
His motorcycle was seized and he was taken to Kathu police station for further questioning.
Man beaten unconscious
A young man who sustained a severe brain concussion in a brawl during the Songkran celebration on Saturday in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Muang district has regained consciousness.
Meanwhile, police may soon issue a summons for his rivals to face punishments, said Muang Nakhon Ratchasima precint superintendent Pol Colonel Patiyuth Singsomroj.
The young man remained under close medical surveillance, he added.
The incident, in which a drunk reveller was attacked in the middle of Jom Surangyat Road by a group of rivals until he lay unconscious, and was caught on camera, with the video clip going viral on Thai social media.
The unconscious man was rushed to hospital, Provincial governor Wichien Chantharanothai had previously urged the public to remain sober and drink moderately as they celebrated Songkran from April 13-15.
There are many reports of drinking related brawls.
Woman held for stealing cash from Australian tourist
Tourist and Pattaya police on Thursday arrested a Thai woman for having allegedly stolen Bt60,000 worth of foreign currency from an Australian tourist in a Pattaya condominium.
The suspect was identified as Kanchanaporn Kruakham, 20, from Nakhon Sawan.
She told police that she had only Bt810 left as the rest was spent drinking with friends.
Earlier this week, Albert Ayoubdel filed a complaint with Pattaya police that a Thai woman stole 4,900 Australian dollars and US$700 from his room.
Kanchanaporn said she had exchanged the cash at an automatic machine on the Thep Prasit Road in southern Pattaya.
